PSAT Tutoring Program

What is the PSAT/NMSQT?

Cosponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT)—often shortened to PSAT—is a standardized test targeting 10th and 11th graders. The PSAT is offered nationally every year in October in a student's school.

Why take the PSAT?

More than 3.4 million high school students take the PSAT every year. The PSAT is a great primer for both the SAT and the ACT. Students can use their PSAT scores as their baseline SAT/ACT scores and manage their preparation accordingly. More importantly, PSAT scores are used to identify National Merit Scholars and award merit scholarships to qualifying 11th graders. Although the PSAT won’t count towards a student's college admissions applications, some of the highest scoring students may win scholarship money.

Aiming for a National Merit Scholarship?

Each year the top 3% of 11th-grade PSAT takers become Semifinalists. Of these, about 7,500 go on to win scholarship money. The National Merit Scholarship Program offers millions of dollars in aid. Additionally, some colleges provide full-tuition academic scholarships to National Merit Scholars. LITE is proud to announce that one of our students was recently named a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist. If you are a student who has the potential to compete for national recognition and college scholarships, LITE has the tools to help you reach your goal.

The Program

  • The first step in the process is for the student to take a diagnostic PSAT, which the tutor uses to determine the student's strengths and weaknesses and to manage the curriculum accordingly.
  • Through one-on-one tutoring, the program covers all the material on the exam, namely vocabulary, reading, grammar, word usage, and math.
  • Student progress is assessed through weekly homework and quizzes.
  • LITE offers timed, proctored practice exams so that students not only gain exposure to test questions but also learn how to manage their time effectively.
