The TACHS exam is a challenging test that all 8th graders applying to the 9 Catholic high schools on Long Island must complete. TACHS is also the exam administered by the Diocese of Brooklyn and the Archdiocese of New York.
Historically, the CHSEE was the exam administered by the Diocese of Rockville Center to students seeking admission to a Catholic high school on Long Island. Since 2020, however, the CHSEE team has partnered with the Diocese of Brooklyn and the Archdiocese of New York to use the same online TACHS exam for all students.
For students planning to attend a Catholic high school in September 2025, they must take the TACHS exam offered in November 2024.
All 9 Long Island Catholic high schools accept the TACHS this year:
At LITE, students work one-on-one with their tutors in our Melville center. Our NYS-certified teachers cover all the material that is addressed on the TACHS exam, specifically vocabulary, reading comprehension, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, word usage, clarity and organization of writing, math, and reasoning and analysis. Students have weekly quizzes and homework assignments to complete.
LITE administers timed, proctored practice TACHS exams so that students can both apply what they have learned in session and adjust their timing, so they can complete the test in the time allotted. The official TACHS exam will be given as an online, at-home remote test in fall 2024. LITE will advise our students on ways to review the online remote testing system, the device requirements needed to take the test online, and the use of Proctorio, the Artificial Intelligence system that will monitor and record the student’s test session.
Our TACHS Tutoring Program is a rigorous one, and we require dedication, hard work, and consistency from each of our students. It is this discipline that not only helps students excel on the Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools, but also establishes confidence and time management skills that carry over into their schoolwork.
In either mid-summer or early fall, the student takes a TACHS diagnostic test so that the tutor can assess his/her strengths and weaknesses and manage the curriculum accordingly. Following the diagnostic test, the student meets with the tutor once a week for 1 hour until he/she is ready to take practice tests. At that point, the student continues to cover the curriculum and reviews practice tests with his/her tutor. The program is designed to prepare our 8th graders for the November 2024 exam.
Each of our students gains acceptance to a prestigious Long Island Catholic high school. In fact, many LITE students receive scholarship money and/or are placed in advanced classes in freshman year, based solely on their excellent entrance exam score. Additionally, the knowledge and the tools that our LITE students gain in our program help to prepare them for the challenging course material in both 8th grade and high school.
The non-refundable registration fee covers all materials and practice tests throughout the program.
